Dear Students and Parents,
We hope that you are enjoying the summer days and some well-deserved time off. This website provides you with information for your summer learning opportunities. As with everything at Hillel, we want to make sure that you understand why we require you to read and work on math concepts during the summer.

First, research has shown that students are more successful when they have prior knowledge and experience. Since 7th graders will be exploring power and 8th graders will be exploring ancient civilizations, we have chosen books to help you start the year with an understanding of these ideas so that you can bring your newfound knowledge to our classroom discussions. The same is true for math practice.

Second, research shows that students who read over the summer gain reading skills, while those who do not often slide backwards. Summer reading will allow you to keep your skills sharp over the summer months. Have you ever forgotten a Hebrew word when you haven’t used your skills in a while? How about the rules for apostrophes when you haven’t written anything in weeks? What about forgetting how to solve a variable when doing an algebra problem?

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. Happy exploring!
